  • Checkin' In - 09/09/09
Hey all, mcconaughey here, checkin in on the cyber world and letting you know what’s happening in my life. It’s been a great summer with some big news, a little travelin, and a lot coming up… -Above and beyond all other news, the most exciting is my lady Camila and I got another baby on the way…not sure if it’s a boy or girl but we have our instincts…what are you thinking? -Levi is doing terrific waiting for his little bro or sis…we had to super child proof the new house because he’s motoring around like Usian Bolt and eatin like Kobayashi, Camila and I can barely keep up. We call him the fruit bandit ‘cause if there’s fruit out, he’s on it, takin it and eatin it. He’s gettin bigger, more fun, smarter and craftier by the day. -Headed over to France in July to show Lance some support in the Tour…stages 18-21...(put a couple pictures in the gallery). He was psyched we came, it was a travelin circus and I saw some gorgeous areas of France I hadn’t before. I got to ride in the team car with Johan Bruyneel which was probably the most eye opening experience of the trip – the riders are in ridiculous shape but the team car drivers are flying through the streets, talkin on the radio’s in different languages, looking at the monitor on the dashboard, all while dodging pedestrians and riders…it was insane. -In the realm of j.k. livin…we got a myspace page for the j.k. livin foundation so check it out and friend us at www.myspace.com/jklivin. j.k. livin also got a twitter page (www.twitter.com/jklivin) – my office updates it all the time about the world of j.k. livin and me…I am not quite ready to have my own but they will let you know what I’m up to… The j.k livin store (www.jklivinstore.com) is also rockin’ some cool new product so check it out and remember a dime of every dollar goes to the foundation. -Mishka is also doing well…we just digitally released his album ABOVE THE BONES worldwide so go download it if you haven’t already. We also have a NEW ALBUM RELEASE comin your way…an acoustic album by Mishka called GUY WITH A GUITAR. I have been working on it for the last couple weeks and it'll be coming your way next month ….it’s got some old tunes, new tunes and makes you feel like he is sittin on a stage with a spotlight and guitar playing to 10,000 people but really just singing to you...I hope you enjoy it as much as I do… -UT football lookin strong this year with a National Championship in our grasp…Rankings have us listed at two and Colt McCoy should have an awesome season…If this team plays as one and is on a mission to win it all one game at a time, we got a chance..looking forward to going down to Austin to see some games…..Hook’em That’s all I got for now and remember, in good times and bad times, now times and all time, just keep livin, mcconaughey
  • Happy Father's Day - June 21, 2009, 2009

We have more blessed news to celebrate this Father’s Day that make this time next year double the fun. Levi is going to be a big brother...Yeah, we pulled off the greatest miracle in the world one more time, Camila and I are expecting our second child, bringing more life into the world, making more to live for. The future looks bright as the family grows and we thank you for all the well wishes you send our way. Viva la evolución, naturally, and in the mean times and all time, just keep livin, Matthew and Camila

  • what I learned in 10K race - September 1, 2008
Ran my first race yesterday...10k Human Race in Austin, Texas.....I’ve tried to stay in good shape lately and started running for exercise again about 3 months ago.....so when I was coming to Austin anyway for the “Surfer, Dude” premiere, I decided to come early to make the race....last week I timed myself 3 different days running a 10k just to get a sense of the distance and pace I would be running.....I timed myself along the FLAT pavement along the beach in Malibu....I ran 44:11, 43:31, and 44:28....ok, so my goal was to run a sub 45:00 in the Human race...here we go.......first of all, Austin is a lot hotter, humid, and hillier than the coastline in Malibu where I was running...Being my first race, Lance Armstrong and other more experienced runners said, “the tendency wil be to get out hot, start too fast, and burn out late....try to keep your first kilometers around 7:10...”.....easier said than done...I was starting on the front row of 14,000 other racers...I bounced off the starting line, feeling like I was skating on ice light as a feather, the adreneline pumping, I had to bridle myself back after the first 100 meters to find a pace I thought was around that 7:10 mark....I settled in to a “comfort zone”....After the race I found out I ran that first mile in 6:15...Ha!!..so much for that take it easy off the line theory....anyway, I felt good...Now it got interesting, and here’s what I learned: 1)hills.....UP-hills...lots of them..best to look down in front of you, one step at a time, instead of gazing at the top, trying to reach it...it sure feels good to “arrive” on top of one.. 2)heat....it was 15-20 degrees warmer than my Malibu running weather...with zero breeze....good thing I like the heat. 3)humidity....wow, this was the major difference...200 meters into the race, my body was shining in sweat...at kilometer 4 it felt like a “fog’ that each stride had to penetrate... 4)Anticipating my “2nd wind”, I thought I was about 7-7.5 km into the race when I turned a corner to read a sign saying I was at the 5km point....hmmm...pace it mcconaughey, your only half way there, and I wasn’t sure if I had already run through that “2nd wind”. 5)know the track...so you don’t do (4).....the false anticipation of being further along than you actually are will mentally fatigue you because your brain tries to relax quicker than it should...Its better to “think” you have 7km to go when you only have 5km, than to have 5km to go when you think you have 3km. 6)8km through finish line....more mental fun and fatigue...not knowing the track, my mind thought (rather, was hoping) that each “turn” was the “final turn”, and that the finish line was “just around the corner”....of course, it was not...more mental fatigue of false anticipation....take deep breaths through the nose....and oxygenate the lower body...the air is thick...its tough to breath as deeply as id like...my whole body feels like “slow bake in the oven on 180.” 7)finally, I turn left onto Congress Ave....i look up and see what is maybe a half mile or so in front of me, a “red banner”, just like the one where I started....is this the finish line I ask myself?...its gotta be....the crowds on the sides of the street are getting thicker, it must be...my legs don’t feel like they are “driving”...they feel a little like jello, and I am concentrating on keeping “form”....i am striding forward, but I don’t feel like I have much in the area of horsepower....that better be the finish....But wait, there’s another “red banner” a half a mile BEHIND the one I am approaching (that I started at)...IS THAT THE FINISH LINE?...i hope not...but if it is, I better save what I have in me a little longer....as I get 300 meters from the first red banner I SEE other runners in front on me sprinting to the banner and “walking” after they pass under it...OK!!!!, the finish line IS the first banner, lets stride it out Mcconaughey....dont trip and eat it (a real concern because at this point I don’t really “feel” my legs)....go.. 8)I finish...my goal was to run sub 45:00 in the race...at this point I have no idea if I ran 43 or 48....im curious...people come up to hand out post race “goodies”...i want no part of them, I want water....and something cold on my head and neck...i have to keep walking, catch my breath....I see my woman Camila and my Son about 40 seconds after the race come up beside me...I give them both a kiss...Camila says she’s been right beside me for the last 30 seconds...I hadn’t noticed because all I could really hear was my heart pounding and my head pulsing... 9)someone says I ran a 43:40....cool..one more water and I’m havin a beer, Jkl
  • Tropic Thunder - August 18, 2008
Hey all, I went to tropic thunder premiere last Tuesday night....All of the cast was there...really funny movie....there are surprises all over this film and just when you think you know where the movie’s goin, another surprise entrance by some character or plot twist surprises you....what a cast of characters..you will see actors you like doing things you’ve never seen them do before...Stiller did a top job directing too...the movie knows what it is and keeps delivering....there’s a lot of protests surrounding the pic, but if you see it, I think you’ll agree that all the “touchy” humor is in context, and in no way mean spirited or irresponsible...its just funny....i hope you enjoy yhe film...i had a blast steppin in to work on this project for just a few days...its another “brand” of comedy and a comedy team (Stiller and gang) that I wanted to play with, and am happy I did....never lose your sense of humor, and just keep livin, mcconaughey
  • Our Son's Name - July 8, 2008
FIRST NAME: "levi" "Levi" was another name for the apostle "Matthew" in the bible....they were, in fact, two names for the same person..our son was born at 6:22 pm, and this particular "time" represents my favorite verse in the book of Matthew in the bible; "if thy eye be single, thy whole body will be full of light." MIDDLE NAME: "alves" Camila's last name is "Alves".. We wanted to incorporate her family name, so we decided to make our child's middle name "Alves".... We welcome "Levi Alves McConaughey" into this wonderful life and look forward to livin it with him, in the mean time and all times, just keep livin, matthew david mcconaughey and camila maria saraiva de araujo alves.
  • Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - March 26, 2008
GOGP...began work in Boston 6 weeks ago...nice to be in a winter environment after 3 summers in a row, but that California sun gonna feel good in June....I am having a blast...my character, Conner Mead, really has a strong point of view on love, women, and family...he's even funnier and more heartfelt than I thought he was on the page...its cool being in a very edgy comedy where the dialogue and situations skirt that "R" rated innuendo..it's adult humor for the young at heart...Mark Waters, the director (Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, Just Like Heaven) is doing a great job...he's really letting me fly and he's got a wicked sense of humor...Jennifer Garner is a what you see is what you get, elegant, down home lady...a real pro...it's a new kind of fun for me to be playing a character that doesn't pander to the masses consciousness....and that is what I mean when I say we're makin an edgy comedy....I'm real happy I finally got to do this picture...it's been around and unmade for several years, and many other actors and directors were in line to do it in the past...I'm glad it didn't work out for them...I'm havin more fun and feel like we are tellin a better story than even I had imagined...we are about halfway through shooting and Michael Douglas (my playboy Uncle) starts working soon...I'm lookin forward to workin with him...I think I have more dialogue in this film than any I've done before...big summations where I give my views on love, marriage, family, and photography...my character speaks the truth but is cynical about the promises of each....until all those damn ghosts of my girlfriends come visit me and scare the you know what outta me...hopefully, I'll make it out alive... Hope you all had a good Easter..time for forgiveness, family, new beginnings and re-birth, college basketball (let's go Texas), and lottsa food....all sounds good to me...meantime and alltimes, just keep livin, mcconaughey

  • My j.k. livin shirt - November 29, 2007
I got this email from a soldier in the U.S. Army who received a jkl shirt while in Afghanistan. It is a cool story so I thought I would share with ya'll. Ray is now back in Iraq serving our country while his wife and three sons await his return in Tennessee, decked out in their new jkl shirts. In the meantime and all times, just keep livin, mcconaughey"I stumbled upon this site and just thought I would share my story with you. I received a J.K. Livin shirt from a box that was sent to my unit in Afghanistan last year. I wore the shirt after duty to get a break from the uniform and never really new where it came from and what it meant. When I got home, I gave the shirt to one of my three sons. He asked me what it meant, so we did a search on the internet and I was surprised to see where it came from...Pretty cool. I really enjoy the music and really like the, "Just Keep Livin" motto. I would just like to say thanks for the support to the soldiers overseas. The shirt made me fill a little more at home when I would wear it. Thanks again, my son more proudly wears the shirt now and I would like another myself...so I told him we could share. As I prepare to depart to iraq again in a few days it makes me fill good to know that folks still support us. Take care and I would love to get a CD of the tunes on your website. Thanks.Ray BischoffCW3, US Army"

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!In a recent interview McConaughey and Mishka sat down and talked about how they met, working together, and the album.
McConaughey, when did you first hear Mishka's music?
McConaughey: I got turned on to your music by Cole Hauser new years 2000. I hadn't slept for 3 nights and I could hear an album playing downstairs and I was tossing and turning trying to sleep. And then this album came on and I slept like a baby for 5 straight hours. When I got up and asked who was on this morning, it was like a lullaby, Hauser said "I think that was Mishka. We listened to it, I said "that's it”! Got turned on to your music right there. For me I heard a truth you were speaking. It was a very personal album. What I heard was more so about your personal life and things going on in your life at that time. There was a grace in that you talked about pain and half way thru the song, most artists go and talk about it, saying "damn you for doing it. How dare you! You're all f*#cked up! But you never make those judgments in that first album. You have an opinion but you never condemned. After that we were all saying "We gotta find this cat!”. I wonder where he is. Documentary started there, "where's Mishka?!" I wanted to meet you and say "you're that singer and song writer!" Way to sing beautiful, true music that can make sense to everybody. The grace with which you talk about pain and that spot before you get into anger. How you observed life, as it was, hard and easy, easy and hard. I could dance to it. And I could sleep to it. It was the first album I loved to get up and jam to and play when I'd want to go to sleep...It's the only album I could sleep too like a baby. You weren't easy to find, bro. I came back, made phone calls, the closest I got was in 2002, and somebody in some company that I called said, "I know Mishka! I saw him in Portugal 8 months ago." Mishka: Which is funny 'cause I haven't been to Portugal! McConaughey: Anyone heard of Mishka???!!!! Let's find him!I'm out of the country and I get a call from my friend Mark Gustawes. He says "this guy named Mishka is playing at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip." I said, "see if it's him and get me a number where I can talk to him." At that point, I never even thought we'd be working together. I just loved your music. I just knew that this cat makes sense, this cat is on it. This is great music. I want to find that person. I thought, "There won't be anything I need to know. I already know it. He made it known in that first album.I called your manager and then I called you. I called you every few weeks. We basically talked about your music. You didn't know anything about me. But I felt like I knew you very well. I lived with your album, where you spoke from your heart, for 4 years. My favorite album is your first album. Greatest Salesman in the World is my favorite book, yours is my favorite album. It's a good combination, Greatest Salesmen and your album. You and I became acquaintances over the phone, I knew your music and then as I got to know you, I felt like we got each other's respect, as humans, over the phone. You invited me to stay with your family. I was looking for an adventure. I put on a backpack and was down at your place 2 days later. We had a ball, we talked music, we'd go to the waterfall, climb a tree, walk a plane or just do anything or nothing at all. Sit around and talk, philosophize, laugh a lot. We became friends over that trip. There was respect that turned into friendship. I came back and I just wanted your music to be heard by more people. I don't know if we can work together but I'm a friend of yours, in music for life. Whether we work together or I give you comments. Any time, if you want me to listen to anything. More ears should be pleased by your music. And down the line from there, we talked, you kept writing, your management parted ways. I just formed a record company, and said, let's get the paper work out of the way and do this. Mishka, when did you first hear about and meet McConaughey? Mishka: I first heard about you in 2000 a few months after you couldn't sleep. Somebody asked you what your favorite music was and what you'd play at your wedding and you said "Mishka". So that's when I first heard about you and heard you were into my music. But then it was like 4 years later that I was playing here in L.A. and Mark Gustawes came down to the show and got in touch with my previous management. I think you got my number, I got your number and you called me up and we just started talking. Just about the time when we made "One Tree” for the 2nd album. You came down to visit me and my parents and Tara and the kids in Nevis. We had a blast. Jamming some tunes, Bob, Steve, Irene, good times, you know? McConaughey: Yeah Mishka: It was bout then that I realized, oh, he's a movie star, he's in a bunch of movies. Maybe I should watch his movies. Watched a couple and I was like wow, he's been in a lot of movies."One Tree" came out, that spring, I was touring around for a year or so. Things fell apart with the other manager. You called me up you're like, "you still into making some music?” I said "yeah”. I had an album half made, we did a few more tunes on it and almost another year, getting an album together, came the first j.k. livin record.McCoanghey, how has the album recording process gone for you?
McConaughey: This is it, "Above the Bones”. And here we are in the mixing sessions and we had a week of recording and we came out with 15 tunes. Now we're in our mixing phase. Six days into the mixing section, 11 tunes mixed. This album is less about one other person. This is ABOVE THE BONES; A love song to humanity, to yourself, to your lover, wife, your father, your mother, your brother, your sister, your past, to people in the past you knew, people in the future you've never met, mother earth, time, in general. There are environmental love songs, songs to humanity, songs about being the best we can be to ourselves and to each other. Where does the inspiration for the songs come from and how do you choose what to put on the album?Mishka: A lot of has to do with having kids. A lot of prayerful thoughts and inspiration come from them. A lot of the songs are older songs that have never been recorded. The oldest one is "Mountains Meet The Sea”. I consider it a hopeful album that is reflective but hopefully gives people a positive outlook, perspective on things. McConaughey: Very hopeful Mishka: A long road, reflection on reincarnation, many levels and phases of life and existence. Many realities that culminate into one; one here and now. McConaughey: You don't put up a wall or a boundary anywhere. Not on those who may have done you wrong. You don't condemn or put up a boundary, you don't give yourself a gate or bars to get out of or someone to get into in your area. Mishka: Walls are an illusion. Walls you put up in yourself, they'll all fall eventually. How was the process of making this album?Mishka: I've seen it grow from something really small into something bigger. We got the full band, all together at once, a good studio, where everything works. This experience in L.A. has been great. It was a like a musical highlight of my life, aside from live stuff. We were really seeing a vision come to reality. I can't believe my ears. I have to go back. I'm just giving thanks. Tell us more about Coastline Journey the song you wrote for SURFER, DUDE?
McConaughey: I sent u the script, and I think all I said was, "have a read, see what you think”. Mishka: I thought it was really funny and it reminded me of my life in many ways. Especially when I was recording my first album, hanging out on the beach in Nevis, windsurfing and then straight into London, studios, tour busses, management, record companies. I could draw a parallel to Surfer, Dude and the reality house. I related to it instantly. The script came with a note from you: " thinking we want some songs”.There was line in the script, "I wonder why mother nature behaves like it does?” It inspired me to write that song. "Your guess is as good as mine. Oceans currents and breeze: beyond the predictions of human beings”. McConaughey, what are your thoughts on this album and producing? McConaughey: My favorite things about Mishka's music are that it's a love song to the kids, to the elders to those who have moved on, and to those who are yet to come. And here we are now mixing and we got an album that I'm really honored to be a part of. I'm honored with this album. We have it. The first time I went in the music studio was in Atlanta. I was nervous and anxious about how the playing field was. I didn't know the tools, the vernacular. And then I got going and it's not really a science, however you get it across, you are talking to musicians who know how to feel words. We don't even have to speak English to the get the point across. Rumor has it, McConaughey had some interesting dance moves during the recording process, true? Mishka: You were excited and into it. As you did your "ballet" you gave the band a visual to work off. I heard that a lot because you really danced the dance. On one song he brought it up to a peak and brought it down slowly, slowly, practically ending in a child's pose. McConaughey: It was fun. It was really fun. There is an instant gratification. You hit it. You may think you hit it, but when you hit. Daryl [producer/guitar player] said he paraphrases with you as a singer. He answers you. He puts you up on a pedestal, he just accents it. Sometimes it just a rose petal. You don't even have to look at each other to pull it off. Y'all do a beautiful dance together. I know the essence of what I love about every song and its also cool to get in there and someone will get hot, like on a certain segment, great to kick back and go, "He's tracking it the whole it way”. Or sometimes I'll feel something; I already know exactly where it will go. It's neat when it makes sense that way. They know what they are and where they want to go. I'm having a ball. Mishka: Me Too.
